1. Avachara is a free avatar maker to dress up to create yourself character.
2. Aion originally launched as a buy to play subscription game by NCSoft, but later went free to play. Despite originally launching in 2008, Aion still looks quite beautiful even today and features some of the best character customization I've seen in an MMORPG. Just take a look at the video above to see what the game's character creator offers.

Drawing is hard. I can't do it. I mean, I probably could, but that takes time that I don't have and effort that I'm not willing to put in, so I'm not going to.

A good solution to not being able to draw whatsoever is character creators/dollmakers/whatever you want to call them. They're like dressup games or paper dolls, but fancier and more customizable. However, a lot of them are either very low-quality (bad images, faces or clothes being stolen from other products or artwork, annoying controls) or aimed at very young girls (plastic-y look, dumbed-down, no options other than pink fluffy dresses.) So I collected some that I thought would be useful.

Most of these are flash games, and none of them cost money. Also worth noting that the majority of them come from Azalea's Dolls, DollDivine, and Rinmaru Games (though there are some exceptions.) None of these are mine, and all were created by artists who have talents that I do not, lol.

Also, disclaimer: it's probably a bad idea to try to use the characters you create in any of these games in any commercial products. They are made by a variety of different artists, and of course, they all have different policies regarding what you can use their games for, but all seem to be in agreement that you shouldn't try to make money off of these games by selling your characters in any way. In regards to things like using their art on different websites or making adoptable characters, you should contact the artist before you do that.

There are generally a lot more female creators than there are male, because girls in general play them more, I suppose. It's good if you have a lot of female characters because you have a lot of options, but also annoying because there's more garbage to sift through. Here are some that are quite good:

• The X-Girl maker is a fairly versatile female superhero creator. It was intended to make X-Men OCs, but you can do a lot beyond that. The graphics are good and there's a wide selection of clothes, including both superhero costumes and regular modern outfits. Some are completely impractical, but you should be able to work with most of them. Some examples of what I made: here and here

• The Queenly Portrait maker is good for creating portrait-like images of female rulers. The clothes are from a good variety of historical periods, and it's useful for fantasy worlds in general. An example.

• The Casual Style maker is good for modern-day teenage or twenty-something women, which probably isn't applicable to sci-fi or fantasy worlds unless they're urban fantasy, but you never know.

• The French Folklore maker is good for peasant girls. There aren't a whole lot of options for the dress, but it's cute and has nice art. An example.

• The Elven Portrait Maker lets you create a the face and hair of a sterotypical elf woman. An example.

• Viking Woman Dress Up Game allows you to make female Vikings-esque warriors. There's skirts and pants options. I can see it being good for fantasy worlds.

• The Sci-Fi Warrior dress up game is Star Wars themed (the titular sci-fi warriors appear to be off-brand Jedi.) It's seperated into sections- 'Martial Artist' has Jedi robes, 'Rebel' has sterotypical military-ish clothes, 'Princess' has flowy dresses similar to Leia's and Padmé's, and 'Slave' has gold-adorned underwear like Leia's (in?)famous outfit. There are lightsabers, blasters, six or so different backgrounds, and you can actually change the lighting. You could probably use it for sci-fi or fantasy.

• The Amazon warrior maker has a lot of impractical armor, but also a pretty decent selection of other stuff. It has some cool backgrounds.

• The Medieval Woman game is exactly what it says on the tin. There aren't tons of options, but there's good color customization.

• The Rinmaru games that pretty much all have the same style: a basic magical girl maker, a lolita maker, a sterotypical action heroine maker, a steampunk girl maker, and a sci-fi girl creator. The doll looks very young for some reason on almost all of them.

• A video game avatar maker that lets you create bards, warriors, guardians, healers, mages, gunners, and beastmasters. The default doll is quite childish-looking, so it's probably best for younger characters.

• The cyberpunk girl game lets you make basic cyberpunk-ish women.

• The dark mage creator is exactly what it sounds like.

• The goddess maker is good for making Greek-ish goddesses, and has a pretty selection of togas, drapes, headresses, armor, et cetera. There's also angel wings and a mermaid tail, IIRC. There's good color selection and you can make the clothes transparent.

• The JRPG cleric maker is part of a series of JRPG themed anime-style games, which are all on her site and have a similar style. I'm unfamiliar with JRPGs, so maybe I sound like an idiot, but I'm pretty sure 'cleric' in this instance means 'vaguely Catholic-themed magical girl.' You can even put little crosses in their eyes. I have no idea why you would need this, but uh, if your world is an AU where priests are 15-year-old girls, here you go.

• Rinmaru's Haunted Portrait creator can be used to make creepy or ordinary female characters with antique-ish hair and clothes. (from u/Thatcherist_Sybil)

• The Gemsona Maker is supposed to be for creating gems from Steven Universe, so it has that sort of cartoony aesthetic to it. That being said, you can make female characters with a bunch of different body types, any skin/hair color you want, and multiple limbs. It's pretty good for making aliens.

• Wedding Dress Designer has a decent color selection and could probably be used to make more modern-looking princesses and aristocrats. If you need an elaborate ballgown but not a medieval one, this game would probably work.

• Southern Belle Dressup is for elaborate dressses that fit the aesthetic and fashion of the 19th century.

• The Glitter Cure OC Maker could be used to make pretty much any magical girl. They're posable, too!

• The CHARAT Rouge character maker lets you make anime-style girls.

• CHARAT Dressup and CHARAT Genesis are both anime OC maker games, with Dressup being slightly more cartoony but otherwise similar to Genesis.

• The Live Portrait Maker lets you create a female face, and it's quite a pretty game if you can put up with your character breathing and looking around as you're creating her. It's also available on the App Store and Google Play store as a free game. The app version has a few more options, and there's also a male version as well.

• The Dress Up Game by KawaiiPanduh is another fun anime girl maker.

There are, in general, not a lot of male-themed character creators. However, that means that the ones you do find are generally high-quality, because they're almost never made by the sites like dressupwho.com that pander exclusively to young children who generate ad revenue without knowing better. Online Character Makers

• The Sci-Fi Warrior II is just a male version of the female one. It has fewer options than the female version (there are no separate sections and the clothes are kind of a blend, and there's no male gold-covered slave bikinis!) but you can still make Jedi or Sith-like characters.

• Christmas Fashion is probably misnamed. It lets you dress up a manga-style boy with stereotypically geeky T-shirts, argyle sweaters, and Star Trek uniforms. You can even give him a necklace that has a mini Rubik's Cube. Again, it probably doesn't work that well with anything but alt history or urban fantasy worlds, but you can give it a go.

• The Warrior Maker lets you make Roman-style gladiators and a few more styles. There's no color customization on anything but skin and hair (it's an older game) but there are decent options and the art style is nice.

• The Sci-fi Male game lets you make a sci-fi-ish guy. There's no color customization and the clothes are almost all black, but there's still some variety, with military uniforms and obnoxiously high Converse alike. You can give him various wounds and mutations (cybernetics, angel wings, make him a lizard person, etc.) It has a pretty much identical female version floating around someplace.

• The CHARAT Blanc character maker is the male version of CHARAT Rouge.

• The Fantasy Prince Maker lets you create a Disney-esque hero in a variety of historical styles.

There are actually a lot more unisex games than I expected! A lot of them are very cartoony and Disney-esque, but if your world has fairies/mermaids, they could work.

Free Character Maker Games

• The Mermaid Scene maker is mermaid-themed, but has a cutsey Disney style. It still has a lot of variety- you can make women with two different body types, men, male and female children, toddlers, and babies, and you can move their tails and arms into different positions.

• The Snow Queen scene maker is pretty much just Frozen themed, with the same 2d Disney style, but if you have ice-themed mages or Norse influence in your world, it could be useful.

• The Pixie Scene Maker is, unsurprisingly, also Dinsey themed. You can make up to 8 fairy characters.

• The Centaur scene maker lets you make a couple and their children in the style of Fantasia.

• The Fairytale scene maker is good for stereotypical fantasy peasants.

• The Merfolk maker has a focus on mermaids. You can make up to 2 males and 2 females with this version. I really like the style of this one; it’s very unique. It can also be used to generate characters: if you click the “random” button, you’ll get a mermaid/man with a matching color scheme. If you want something that doesn’t match whatsoever, click “Chaos.”

• The Lord of the Rings Scene Maker is one of my favorites (and doesn’t look straight out of The Little Mermaid.) You can make male and female humans, elves, dwarves, hobbits, and wizards, and choose from 16 different backgrounds from 4 different locations. Just an all-around versatile and nice fantasy character creator.

• The Ascension couple maker features styles from Rinmaru’s visual novel. Some of them are highly impractical, but it’s still a nice game with a male and a female character.

• I actually have no idea what you’d call Waivera. It’s supposedly for a world in which flooding has destroyed almost everything and mutant humans live underwater. It’s unique, but there’s almost no color choice. Either way, you could probably make some cool dystopian characters with it.

• The Game of Thrones game is similar in style to the Lord of the Rings one. They both work well for generic fantasy characters. Also, totally off-topic, but there’s also a Game of Thrones/Disney crossover game, because obviously those things go together.

• The Tudors is good for fantasy royalty, naturally. It’s also a lot like the Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones makers (similar models, different hairstyles/clothes.)

• This basic couple creator lets you make manga style couples. It has pretty generic clothing and faces, but you can make gay, lesbian, and straight couples.

• The Anime Couple Creator is similar, but has more specific outfits. You can find a bunch of costumes from various shows and series, and also sci-fi and fantasy armor and outfits. You can also make gay, lesbian, or straight couples!

• The Sailor Moon OC maker was intended to be used for Sailor Moon OCs, but you could make practically any magic girl and pretty much anything else with it once you get the hang of drag and drop. You can add both male and female characters. Just beware that almost everything in this game is covered in glitter and mastering drag and drop takes… a while.

• This other Star Wars character has both male and female options- the style of it is generic enough that making the character female pretty much just gives them a chest. It has outfits from Star Wars and other vaguely sci-fi/fantasy themed clothes. You can also make them a member of about 8 Star Wars races. The color options are literally limitless.

• The Post-Apocalyptic Duo maker lets you make a boy and a girl. The girl has slightly fewer options than the guy and several booty shorts and open toed shoes that would probably be bad choices for an apocalypse, but overall it’s pretty good. Some examples. Another good thing is that they’re not kissing or holding hands, so you don’t have to make a couple (the ones I made are fraternal twins on the top, and cousins on the bottom.)

• Hero Machine 3 is kind of hard to learn, but it has a ton of options and you can create pretty realistic-looking people. There’s a wide variety of things to choose from and limitless colors, so it’s pretty useful for almost all genres. I love this maker.

• Hero Forge lets you make custom tabletop characters. They’re kind of cartoony but cute, and there’s lots of clothing options.

• Arabian Nights Dress Up lets you create men and women in the style of Aladdin.

• The Anime Avatar Maker has pretty much everything you could want and an androgynous base.

• The Cartoon Character Maker can be used to make either a man or a woman.

Character Creator

These are non-Flash games that aren't really focused on dressing up, but I've still found helpful (sometimes.)

• The Sims games have an excellent character maker. Depending on the version, you can change facial features, as well as body type, hair, clothing, et cetera. You can also download mods from sites like ModTheSims if the default options aren't working (it's pretty likely you won't be able to make a fantasy character with clothes from the mid-2000s, so thank God for mods.) If you don't already have the Sims, maybe don't spend $30 just for a character creator, but if it's been sitting unplayed on your laptop, maybe fire it up and start creating some Sims.

• Episode Interactive has a decent character creator buried someplace within it's writing portal. Episode is a choose-your-own adventure app that is notorious for it's borderline insane advertisements, crappy cliche content, and horrendous community, but their online writer portal does let you create characters in three different art styles. Fair warning that it only really makes young, attractive men and women in their early to mid twenties.

• Love Nikki is a mobile game that's kind of like an RPG, but with fashion instead of weapons. You can buy and craft and evolve clothes, then use them in fashion battles, which are treated just as seriously as actual battles in-universe. It's an extremely addicting game, and once you play for a while, you can rack up wardrobes consisting of hundreds of thousands of items. It requires a decent amount of effort to actually get clothing, but I like it because it has everything from cute little fairy outfits to tragic stories about doomed cyborgs told in the form of clothing. It's not super easy to play or anything, and some items cost $$$, but if you're into fashion and have already played every game on this list, maybe check it out.
